Tigers and Elephants Escape Cartel Violence in Mexico’s Sinaloa
In a distressing turn of events, escalating cartel violence in Culiacan, Sinaloa, has forced the evacuation of over 700 exotic animals from the Ostok Sanctuary. Among the animals relocated are tigers, elephants, jaguars, monkeys, and lions.
The sanctuary, previously located near the cartel stronghold of Jesús María, faced increasing threats due to the intensifying conflict between rival Sinaloa Cartel factions. Staff reported instances of gunfire, supply shortages, and direct threats, making it unsafe for both humans and animals.
The relocation process was carried out in secrecy to avoid further violence, with animals transported under peaceful white flags to a more secure location in Mazatlan. While the immediate danger has been mitigated, concerns remain about the widespread reach of cartel activities throughout Mexico.
