Study Finds Pets More Effective Than Partners for Stress Relief
A global survey conducted among 30,000 pet owners reveals that 65% prefer to de-stress with their pets rather than with partners, family, or friends. The study, commissioned by Mars Petcare and the mental health company Calm, highlights the important role pets play in promoting mental wellbeing. Over half of respondents appreciated their pets’ silent companionship during stressful times, while nearly a quarter valued expressing worries to their pets without expecting a response. Notably, 90% of pet owners found their pets’ presence inherently calming. In addition, pets encouraged healthy habits, with 80% reporting pets prompted them to take breaks from work, screens, or chores. These findings support the benefits of pet interaction, such as increased oxytocin levels through touch. Mars and Calm have launched a partnership to further explore and promote these wellbeing benefits through a pet-inspired content series and a social media campaign gathering stories about pets’ positive impact on mental health.
